Today's Supreme Court
w/Penny Hansen
Join us as Penny Hansen returns to discuss the important cases and decisions made by the Supreme Court recently. The presentation will focus on the major Constitutional issues being decided by a clearly activist and divided court: gun control, religion and presidential power, etc. She will focus on the historical and political background of these issues and the legal philosophies of the justices along with the procedural mysteries of this, the least well-known of our three branches of government. We thoroughly enjoyed Hansen's Village presentation in 2023 and look forward to hearing her explore critical decisions made by the Court in the past two years.
Penny Hansen has been a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute since 2011, and now serves on its Board of Directors. Her ever-evolving course, Today’s Supreme Court: A Class for Citizens, has been presented 16 times to hundreds of participants at OLLI and in numerous other educational settings. In 2021, she added a new class, “Populism and the Presidency” to her OLLI efforts. Prior to retirement, she had a 30-year career at the Environmental Protection Agency, implementing the country’s first recycling, hazardous waste control, acid rain, and innovative environmental technology verification programs. She was educated at Skidmore College, Johns Hopkins University, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Her post-EPA life focused on consulting on environmental issues domestically and around the world, along with studying her new interest in the Supreme Court. She is a proud fourth-generation Washingtonian and a passionate believer in an educated citizenry.
